County Notes Continued Recycling Success

The spring “Hard to Recycle” Day held on Saturday, May 17 was a very successful event, according to the Progressive Workshop.

CEO Len Meneely gave results that 1,517 tires, 27.6 tons of electronics, seven units of lead-acid batteries, five tons of scrap metal, and 178 gallons of motor oil were collected in that four-hour event.

“I continue to be totally amazed at the response of the community to our Hard to Recycle Days. The most recent event produced, by far, more materials than we ever expected,” Meneely said. “It is rewarding to recognize how important the program is to effectively keep materials out of roadside dumps and landfills and to be recycled into useful products. Once again “Thanks” to all who brought materials or in any way helped out with the program!”

Items that were received for recycling included clean car and truck tires with a $1 charge, white goods with a $10 fee for items containing Freon, and scrap metal.

Armstrong County Department of Planning and Development Planning Division Director Sally Conklin said steps are being taken to ensure reimbursement.

“In order to receive reimbursement for the tire-collection portion of the event, we have documents that are required to be sent to (the Department of Environmental Protection) for 50 percent reimbursement,” Conklin said. “There’s a record of operation, application for reimbursement and a W-9.”

Electronics donated are dismantled under the Covered Device Recycling Act, which was passed in 2010 to establish recycling of certain products – such as computers, televisions and peripherals attached to those devices.
