SPORTS ZONE: A Week Off From Sports Is Good For The Soul

Listen to Mike Waterloo on Sports Zone, Saturdays at 11AM, on WTYM AM 1380 radio.

Often, people come up to me and ask me if what I do actually feels like a job. While there is more that goes into writing, announcing or covering a game than many people think, I usually just smile and tell them that no, it doesn’t feel like a job. I think it’s a fair statement to say that anyone that truly loves and has a passion for their job can say that they don’t feel like working either. That being said, like anyone else, I needed a vacation.

When arriving upon the vacation home that I’ve spent the past week at, I realized that I was good because they had a couple of televisions there. After looking at the channels and realizing only seven came in, I wondered how I was going to survive the week with no Wimbledon, baseball or PGA Tour action. A week later, I can officially say I loved it.

Seven days gone by and not one sporting event watched and had it not been for my brother updating me, I wouldn’t know the outcome of any games. It puts it in perspective about how important sports actually are. Sure they are a form of entertainment and going back to the Great Depression, they allowed fans to escape the real life struggles they were facing. When it comes down to it, though, it’s just a game and should be treated as such. The outcome won’t change your life either way and a week off may be just what you need.
