Annual Outdoor Activity Moves to September

by Jonathan Weaver

Local residents can welcome the color and coolness of the fall season this weekend during the annual HEALTHY Armstrong “Hike and Bike” along the Armstrong Trail.

Project Coordinator Trisha Brice explained this weekend’s fun.

“The Hike and Bike is an opportunity for families to try out the Armstrong Trail – just a fun morning on the trail,” Brice said. “Families can go north on the trail or south– their choice.

This year, families will be able to take part in a scavenger hunt – designed by Slippery Rock University student (and Ford City High native) Andrew Huska – a Public Health major.

“That is just a way to show what the trail has to offer in Armstrong County – it’s not just a place to walk or run, but you may see some wildlife, some flowers or you may pass a friend along the way,” Brice said. “(Only) one trip to the Trail is not the goal of the Hike and Bike – it’s really to encourage families to spend more quality time together being active.”

Poor weather has plagued the past two Hike and Bikes – which were held in October - and prompted the change.

Pedometers and Walking Sticks will be available for participants to try.

Bottled water and healthy snacks will also be provided.

The event begins at 9AM near the Armstrong County Courthouse in Kittanning.
