Salvation Army Kicks Off Holiday Fun

More than 30 kids brought their moms and dads to a family fun event yesterday afternoon at the Salvation Army in Kittanning. It is one of several family events planned during the Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season.

It was unclear if kids brought their parents, or the parents brought the kids. But one thing for sure – it was a family event!

The Salvation Army in Kittanning hosted an “Operation: Fun and Games” family night yesterday. Lieutenant Amber Imhoff said that despite the “spy” theme, there was a more important reason for the event.

“It was our intent to get families out to have a good time with one another,” she said.

Imhoff said the spy theme was a carryover from the theme used for their summer Vacation Bible School.

“This summer we had a ‘Spy Academy VBS’, so we are carrying on with that theme.”

Projected on the big screen was a special movie complete with Christian super heroes and plot.

The event was full of surprises and food.

“They had some stations, games that they played – They decorated cookies with funny faces and made disguised masks. We had pizza and a good time as families. We feel the biggest attack on society is on family life today.”

Imhoff said the age groups were not limited to just elementary age.

“We have kids as young as newborns here and up to sixteen that came with their parents. There was a good wide range of ages. We had quite a few families that came that we haven’t seen for activities before. I think we only had one little girl that came without her parents.”

This event was the first of many events planned by the Salvation Army over the next few months.

“We have some other family fun nights that will be coming up. On December 19, we are going to be throwing a community Christmas party at Worthington Library at five o’clock. Every Sunday of Advent at three o’clock, we will have a family adventure service that will have fun activities, games, and refreshments afterwards. Then in February, we are going to be doing a superhero family reading night at the Kittanning Library. There are a lot of family activities coming up and kids programs that families can get involved in and sign their kids up for.“

Imhoff said the family activities are always free. For more information or to sign up for activities, call the office at 724-543-6622.
