BENNETT: “Thanksgiving”

An Adaptation of “Country Chronicle” by Lansing Christman

During this season of reflection, it is natural that our thoughts go back to the Pilgrims and their first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Colony. On that day long ago they gathered to express their profound thanks to God for His providence. Their new land had yielded food to give them strength and sustain life. I like to think all of us are Pilgrims in a sense, for we too express our gratitude on our pilgrimage through the years. For the young, it is just beginning. For we who are as old as dirt, it has been a long pilgrimage, one of trust and faith, of hope and love.

My own pilgrimage has been spent all around the country and overseas. Even when I was stationed far away, I continued to love my native small town home. I returned to this native home several years ago for it is a part of my being, a part of my long pilgrimage through life.

To me, each day is a day of thanksgiving, a day of expressing my gratitude for the things we take for granted in our town. The changing seasons bring many sights and sounds. The robins in spring, the dandelions in summer, the falling leaves in fall and the snow of winter.

All provide peace and tranquility and are part of my pilgrimage through life.

As time continues toward Christmas, may we remember how lucky we are to live in this United States and in this town. Yes, our bridge is finally open and life is breathing back into main street. Let us remember how precious life is and how close we can come to losing it within a few seconds. (I was that close in an accident this past September) . I close with the thought for the day, “He who knows nothing is closer to the truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors” Please keep that thought in mind as we complete this year of 2014. Many important decisions are yet to be made for our country for our state and our community. Think about it.

It is that time of year to thank God for the wonders of creation and His goodness to humankind.

It is a time of laughter and coming together with friends and family to pause and remember who we are and where we are from. As the Pony Farm web site explains: We’re from Western Pennsylvania, we hold onto our guns and our religion and we’re proud of it.

Happy Holidays.

Jack, You had me there for a moment until you mixed in the Guns with Religion. I’ll just separate the two, Thank You. Happy Holidays

Jack: I knew you couldn’t write a nice article without ruining it with the gun comment. That took away from everything that you wrote. Too bad.

Isn’t mixing guns and religion the source of most of the problems in the middle east?

  • By jorn jensen, December 3, 2014 @ 7:36 PM

Jack, keep those liberals on their toes.

  • By mad-2010, December 4, 2014 @ 3:06 AM

What does Thanksgiving have to do with keeping liberals on their toes? JJ, get a Grip!

  • By jerry6, December 4, 2014 @ 7:51 AM

Jensen: You give conservatives a bad name. You have no class and I don’t care how much education you have, you sure don’t act like it. Educated people don’t write the things that you do.

  • By blutoblutarsky, December 4, 2014 @ 2:54 PM

An editorial about Thanksgiving from the local online paper was supposed to keep a political group “on their toes”? Get a grip lol

  • By mad-2010, December 5, 2014 @ 2:53 AM

Well, It’s Unanimous the Onocentaur Award of the Year goes to Jorn Jensen….

  • By jerry6, December 5, 2014 @ 8:47 AM

Jorn: When I read the things you write on here, I can never decide if you were the class clown or the bully in school.

  • By jorn jensen, December 6, 2014 @ 4:26 PM

It IS so much fun to rattle the liberals’ cages.

  • By blutoblutarsky, December 10, 2014 @ 4:11 PM

Mad- Jorn would rather America burn than work together with someone he disagrees with politically.

  • By mad-2010, December 12, 2014 @ 11:57 PM

Bluto.. You’re right about old jj.. However, both political parties need to work together for a better America. I am starting to think Wall Street and the Corporations own this country, man.
