A Sunday evening accident restricted travel lanes on Route 28 in Mahoning Township.
According to Pennsylvania State Police Investigator Darren Rice, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado truck was pulling a trailer on Route 28, south of the intersection with Tipple Road. The vehicle approached a left-hand curve in the roadway and failed to negotiate the curve. The truck hit the embankment, continued to travel off the roadway, and impacted a utility pole. The impact caused the trailer to hit the tailgate of the Silverado.
Rice stated that the driver, Jason Hempel, 44, from Manor, PA, detached the trailer and left it in the lanes of travel, and departed the scene. The vehicle was discovered three miles south of the accident without the operator.
Meanwhile, a 2016 Ford F-150 truck was traveling in the same lane of travel and struck the trailer that was left on the roadway. The driver of the Ford F-150 was Jesse Hempel, 46, of East Butler.
Rice said Jason Hempel will be fined for abandoning the vehicle.
The State Police were assisted by the Dayton Fire Department, Mike’s Towing, and Terry’s Towing.
