08/05/1969 – Area grocery stores are selling paper towels for 25 cents a roll, and 6-1/2 oz. cans of tuna, four for a $1.

08/05/1969 – Closer scrutiny of expenditures for street resurfacing in Kittanning was the only concrete point that emerged from a heated discussion between two councilmen and public works superintendent Chester Cunningham at last night’s borough council meeting. In the future, council will be given cost estimates on resurfacing to be done by borough employes with borough equipment before approval is given. Patching will continue to be done at the discretion of Cunningham.

08/05/1969 – “Finians Rainbow” starring Fred Astair and Petulia Clark, is showing at the State Theater, Kittanning.

08/05/1969 – Fifth grade students from Shannock Valley Elementary and two teachers are participating in an outdoor camping program at Cook’s Forest State Park. Those students participating are: Mike Semanovich, Jerry Wingard, Peter Tate, Greg Kashur, Robert Brinkley, Bob Bartosh, Clifford Nichols, John Burns, Ross North, Mark Kough, Hans Houser, Lorri Talleri, Tammy Talleri, Anna Marie Spera, Patsy Dill, Kathy Rankin, Christine Kaplon, Kathleen Kovach, LuAnne McCullough, Cheryl Walker, and Avaleen Prugh.

08/05/1969 – Three American prisoners were released yesterday by North Vietnam, bringing the number released since January 1968 to nine. All but one were pilots.

08/05/1969 – Ford City Council will consider construction of a new borough building and a redevelopment program when they meet in adjourned session at 7PM Aug. 18. Ford City is eligible for about $2 million in federal funds through an urban renewal program. Chuck Nath, executive director of the redevelopment authority of Armstrong County, said “You need to do something with the business district or you’re going to lose it. Something must be done for PPG Industries, like more access roads.” He told council that the completion of the Expressway will mean “such an excess” of people in Armstrong County. “You’d better be ready for it!”

08/05/1964 – A contract to buy 3.3 million tons of coal annually to supply most of the needs of Armstrong County’s giant Keystone generating station has been signed.

08/05/1949 – Today was the last day for Kittanning children to make use of the playgrounds this summer. With the staging of a pet-parade tonight, the playgrounds will fold up their equipment and go into retirement for the winter.

08/05/1944 – Memorial service for John Goodwin Baillie who was killed in action with the U.S. Army in Myitkyina, Burma, will be at First Presbyterian Church of Ford City.

08/05/1944 – Two disheartening messages were received this week by Mr. and Mrs. John J. Lefchik of 1011-7th Ave., Ford City. The messages told of one son, Sgt. Charles Lefchik, being missing in military action, and another son, Sgt. Edward J. Lefchik, being wounded.

08/05/1939 – Some improvement was reported by Armstrong County Memorial Hospital authorities in the condition of Mrs. Faletta Lewis of West Winfield, who was seriously injured in a head-on traffic collision on Route 66 near South Bethlehem.

08/05/1939 – Success of Bicycle Day to be held in Kittanning as a feature of the community recreational program, was indicated today. Playground director Miles Milliron said that 39 boys and girls have entered the contest.

08/05/1929 – Graf Zeppelin starts on return trip around-the-world flight.

08/05/1929 - Fred Boylstein, Kittanning boxer, was defeated in the third round by Jackie Murray, a Pittsburgh fighter, in a bout at McKeesport. The referee stopped the fight before the third round was finished.
