An Apollo-area landmark has been destroyed by fire overnight.
Fire crews battled the blaze at the Belvedere Hotel, located just across the railroad tracks from Apollo in Oklahoma Borough, Westmoreland County.
The hotel was built in 1905 by Joseph Gianini. It was named “Belvedere” because the name means “beautiful view” in Italian.
The hotel was unique because it was built into a hillside and had a view of the Kiskiminetas River as well as Apollo Borough.
Fire companies responding to the scene were Oklahoma, Washington Township (Westmoreland), Vandergrift 1 & 2, Apollo 2 & 3, Bethel Township, Burrell Township, Gilpin Township, Kiski Township, North Apollo, and Parks Township.
