Historical Headlines - November 29

11/29/1968 – G. Arthur Smith, 76, of Kittanning RD3 was killed when his car was struck by a car driven by Byron Painter, 22, of Kittanning RD7 near Walkchalk. Painter suffered minor injuries. Smith’s death was the 31st highway fatality recorded in Armstrong County in 1968.

11/29/1968 – A Thanksgiving Day fire destroyed the home of the Arthur Blystone family. The fire was “too far gone” when Bethel Township firemen arrived and it was a hopeless battle from the beginning. The house was owned by Ruben Mervis, a Kittanning businessman. According to the date on the basement wall, the house is at least 60 years old. Blystone is employed by Preston Grimm, an Apollo contractor, and was at work when the fire broke out. The Blystone’s 20-year-old son, William, is in the Army and stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

11/29/1968 – Professional table tennis players arrived in Ford City yesterday and will paly in an exhibition and tournament Saturday night beginning at 7:30 in the Ford City High School gym. The pros are Bernard Buklet, ranked one of the top five players in the United States, and Errol Resek, ranked among the top 12 tennis players in this country. The pros are able to make trick shots 20 feet from the table.

11/29/1963 - The weather was not quite right for it, but Santa Claus came to Kittanning today and hundreds of young ones turned out to greet him. Instead of snow, there was rain- and lots of it. Still, between 200 and 300 boys and girls, equipped with almost as many umbrellas, cheered along St. Nick as he made his entry down Market St. in Kittanning Hose Co. #1 Emergency Truck.

11/29/1958 - Hunters headed for the hills will be given a chance to “fill up” in Kittanning before continuing their trek in search of big game. Chief of Police Meldren Bowers said the section between Jefferson St. and Grant Ave. on Market St. will be cleared of cars so hunters can park and eat before continuing into the woods country.

11/29/1958 - Kittanning HS will play host to the Armstrong Co. Chorus and Orchestra when the 80 piece orchestra and 150 member chorus presents an annual musicale in Kittanning Junior HS auditorium.

11/29/1948 - The Highway Dept.’s snowplows went into action today to clear slush off primary roads in Armstrong Co. A little more than 3 inches of snow was reported at various places on the highways.

11/29/1948 - The board of directors of Kittanning Boosters Club voted to disband the organization and turn over its money to the Kittanning Independent Athletic Club, it was announced today, “inasmuch as the Boosters and the Key-Eyes are working towards the same goal.”

11/29/1943 - Severely injured in the leg Twp. near Belknap last Tuesday, George McWilliams, 25, of Irwin RD 2. died in Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital.

11/29/1943 - Raymond Starr, 11 year old Dayton RD 2 boy, is a patient in Adrian Hospital, Punxsutawney, suffering from a badly fractured right foot. The boy’s foot was caught under a horse he was riding when the horse slipped and fell near his home.

11/29/1938 - An $8000 estimate on water and smoke damage to stock of the J.R. Einstein clothing store today boosted the total loss in the fire-damaged Colwell-Arnold building, Market and N. McKean Sts. to more than $30000.

11/29/1938 - Double funeral services will follow the tragedy in which 2 Paulton hunters were overcome by gas in a Ridgeway rooming house early yesterday. Services for Charles Bobbolono, 49, and his son in law, Joseph Cielo, 33, both residents of the little Kiski Valley village, will be held at the former one’s home Thursday afternoon. The Rev. E.P. Harper, pastor of Apollo Methodist Church will be in charge.

11/29/1938 - Bus travel was possible between Kittanning and Pittsburgh today with inauguration Monday of Penn Transit Co. service between Kittanning and New Kensington.

11/29/1933 - Dr. J.B.F. Wyant, widely known Kittanning doctor was elected president of Kittanning Kiwanis Club.

11/29/1933 - An annual union Thanksgiving service will be held Thanksgiving morning in St. John’s Lutheran Church, N Jefferson St. The Rev. W.K. Morgan, pastor of First Baptist Church, will preach the sermon.

11/29/1933 - J. Denny Daugherty will be principal speaker Sunday afternoon at an annual memorial service of Kittanning Elks Lodge. Vocal selections will be sung by Frank J, Atkins and J. Arthur McDermott.
