
Surrounded by staff, Armstrong County Tourist Bureau Outgoing President Jack Bennett holds plaque presented to him at yesterday’s luncheon.
A Christmas celebration luncheon was given at the Belmont Complex in honor of a man who has led the Armstrong County Tourist Bureau for the past 13 years.
Jack Bennett has served the Armstrong County Tourist Bureau on its Board since 2004. During his tenure, he has supervised four different directors, volunteered at all Tourist Bureau events, the Battle of Kittanning war re-enactment, Kiski Junction Railroad excursion, festivals, and the Gateway Clipper cruises.
He is a graduate of Kittanning High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Following his May graduation, he went into the U.S. Army and found himself in Viet Nam in November. He continued to serve before retiring in 1999 as a full Coronel. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4843 and a lifetime member of AMVETS.
He has served as Trustee of the Manorville United Methodist Church, Food Bank volunteer, Downtown Kittanning, Inc. board member, Fort Armstrong Folk Festival board member, former president and board member of the YMCA, and has been a WTYM AM 1380 talk show host. He is an avid golfer.
He is a certified NRA pistol instructor and president of the Pony Farm Trap and Gun Club.
Jack is a member of the Shannock Valley Car Club and is proud of his little red Corvette with the license plate 2MUCH4U. He is also a national judge for the American Antique Car Association.
He has received the County Volunteer of the Year award.
He is the owner/operator of Jack’s Tracks Train Shop and is a certified repair station for Lionel trains.
He and his wife, Luella Bennett, have been married for 35 years.
Alle-Kiski Strong Chamber of Commerce Lynda Pozutto presented Jack with a plaque honoring his years of service.
“There is probably not a day that goes by in downtown Kittanning that you don’t see Jack walking around with his briefcase heading from one event to another. We appreciate all that Jack has done for Armstrong County and Kittanning.”
In accepting the award, Jack, who said he stays active at his doctor’s advice to combat Parkinson’s Disease, stood in front of the Tourist Bureau members and offered his appreciation for their thoughtfulness.
“I don’t deserve it. It necessary for me. I have a lot of fun at it.”
Jack will be stepping down as the Tourist Bureau President at the end of this year.
