In the first week of mandatory practices, the Armstrong River Hawks varsity girls soccer team prepares for their first game on Thursday August 31 against St. Joseph at Freeport starting at 4:00 PM.
The Armstrong River Hawks varsity girls soccer team started their first week of practice on Monday in what will be their debut season in 2017.
Last year, varsity Head Coach Matt Riggle had what he described as a litmus test with the junior high girls soccer program at Armstrong which he coached.
“It started last year with the junior high team. We had a little bit of a litmus test with it to see can we get enough girls to play, and once we knew we had a lot of interest, and we picked up two girls from the boys team we knew we had something good. It’s baby steps, you have to start somewhere and that’s what we’ve done,” Riggle said.
This season will be the start of a new program, and the River Hawks will be playing 11 exhibition games before they become fully a part of the WPIAL potential playoff picture.
“We’re playing exhibition games this year in the WPIAL, because this is our first year, but it’s experience for everyone,” Riggle said.
Assistant Coach Marc Perella added “we’re playing exhibition games this year in the WPIAL, because this is our first year, but it’s experience for everyone, and if more girls are interested they should come out and give it a try”.
The Armstrong River Hawks varsity girls soccer team will take the field for the first time in school history on Thursday, August 31 at Freeport against St. Joseph at 4:00 PM.
