Festival Finishes Up With a Bang

It may look like movie special effects, but it was just the grand finale of Saturday night fireworks at the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival. (submitted by Jake Rearick)

The 46th Annual Fort Armstrong Folk Festival concluded last night. Festival officials said that the event was well attended, with Sunday having perhaps the largest attendance in festival history.

On Saturday night, the Kittanning Citizen’s Bridge looked more like the set of a movie, complete with special effects from the fireworks.

Throughout the four-day event, main food attractions included roast beef and ham sandwiches and fresh-squeezed lemonade. And don’t forget the hand-breaded mushrooms that were a treat this year.

David Henderson of Kittanning generally plays the piano, but tried his skill at the Bullback Mandolin at the Steel Clover Music tent. Mike Cook from Ford City is in the background.

David Henderson of Kittanning hung out for awhile in the Steel Clover Music tent, trying out some of the stringed instruments, including the Bullback Mandolin from the late 1890’s.

“I’m actually just messing with it. The only instrument I can kinda play by ear is the piano,” he said.

Mike Cook from Ford City plays in “The Forrest Floor” band. He also tried out the Mandolin in the Steel Clover Music tent, playing his personal composition, “Gail’s Runaway Song”. He said his band is newly formed, but is enjoying popularity.

“We are still writing but we are ready to record in September. I’m just checking out the booth and seeing all the fun, and having a good time,” he said.

Temperatures this year stayed in the 70s and low 80s - perfect weather for a festival, with only one evening of rain.

Volunteers cut up hundreds of lemons at the Rotary Club Lemonade tent.

I thought this year’s festival was one of the best ever!
A big Thank You goes out to the organizers of it!

Can someone please tell Jack Bennett that pickup trucks, especially four wheel drive ones, are not street rods?!
