With the fall sports season ending and the winter sports season quickly approaching Armstrong’s boys basketball team has been holding bi-weekly open gyms to prepare for the upcoming season.

Now that the fall sports have ended this week was the first week that River Hawks head coach Greg Hutcherson had the opportunity to see some of the fall athletes who haven’t been able to make it to a prior open gym. Hutcherson said this week was about easing those players in.

“This week we give what I call their free week, so I give all the football players off this week. It’s optional, but all of them are here (Tuesday) so that’s a good sign. We are playing in a fall league Wednesday at Freeport and we are playing a shootout this Saturday at Fox Chapel, so those football guys are going to get back into basketball shape real quick.”

Hutcherson went on to explain how his team has fared during fall league play.

“Right now we are 0-2 in the fall league. We lost to Knoch in our first game and in our second game we lost to Deer Lakes. The Deer Lakes game was the same night as the volleyball playoffs so we sent our freshmen down there to get some experience.”

Armstrong will play at Freeport today against West Shamokin.
