The DeLuca Dome: What to Expect From Armstrong vs McKeesport

Head Coach Frank Fabian and the rest of the River Hawks squad hope to improve to 3-0 on the season after Friday’s match against McKeesport.

by Jake DeLuca

Armstrong finds themselves with a 2-0 record after their first two games of the season and although this is just the kind of start any team would be looking for, the River Hawks will be facing their toughest challenge to date in the McKeesport Tigers.

Last week the Tigers were able to hold on to a 14-7 lead after Franklin Regional made an attempt at a fourth quarter comeback, moving McKeesport to 1-0 on the season.

This week they too will face their toughest task in Armstrong running-back/defensive-back Zane Dudek, who has scored all nine of the River Hawks’ touchdowns this season. In an interview after the win against Moon with WTYM Commentator Brandon Schrecengost, Dudek called this game against McKeesport a ‘big test’.

Dudek, who has put up over 270 yards in his first two games as well as two interceptions (one returned for a TD last week against Moon), will again be key to the River Hawks’ success, but McKeesport may have something to say about that.

Offensively McKeesport has a number of weapons, but there are three that stand out the most - their Quarterback Jayvaun Shear and running-backs John Harper and Breon Green.

Last week against Franklin Reigonal, Jayvaun Shear put up 152 total yards (36 pass / 116 rush), which led the team in total yards along with a rushing touchdown, but he isn’t perfect.

Against Franklin Regional, Shear fumbled the ball four times and lost one, so ball security should be something the River Hawks look to exploit. Along with having four fumbles, Shear was only able to complete 28.6% of his passes, though it should be noted that his game revolves around the option and designed QB runs.

Now on to the backs for the Tigers.

Last week John Harper (59 yards / 5.9 Avg.) and Breon Green (96 yards / 5.1 Avg.) carried the ball for a combined 155 yards on the ground. John Harper is a dual threat with the ability to throw the ball also as he went 1/1 for 28 yards through the air.

Last week defensively the Tigers allowed 238 yards on the ground to Franklin Reigonal, so there could be room for Zane to run if the play is executed correctly.

The key for both of these teams is shutting down the run, and that will be determined by how well the offensive and defensive lines for both teams execute their assignments.

I believe that this game could go either way and will be a true test to see how Armstrong competes with a powerhouse football program like McKeesport.

Great start this season but come on now coach. Dude scored every touchdown so far. You better build a complete offense especially if he gets hurt!!
