Every kid should have the right to play baseball, and Tammy Peluso has been bringing America’s game to children with special needs for over a decade.

The Ford City Champions is a baseball team for children (ages 4-18) with special needs, which started eleven years ago and is growing every year.

Lenape Heights Golf Course is set to host the “2nd Annual Champions Golf Outing” on August 13th starting at 9:00 AM with sign in beginning at 8:00 AM. Although early registration ended July 31st you can still register a group of four for $320.00 with proceeds going directly to the Ford City Champions baseball team.

The Peluso family has been in charge of the Ford City Champions team since its inception and Tammy says donations and outings like the one at Lenape Heights are what help to make the league as free as possible.

“With last years’ golf outing we were able to buy cleats, bat bags, the shirts and hats for the children as well as a picture package for the children (this year). My husband (Tom) and I started this fundraiser so the kids and parents wouldn’t have to worry about the cost,” Tammy explained.

Tammy went on to explain what the organization and playing baseball means to the kids who participate.

“(It means) everything to these kids. I have children that come and play and you would think they are playing a game at PNC Park. I have had children come to me who couldn’t walk or talk who now walk and talk. Over time, several children have been progressing socially and they have been getting better at playing baseball, just like every other child. For me I love doing it (organizing/coaching for the Ford City Champions). I love seeing them smile, I love seeing when they hit the ball and their face lights up. It’s a very exciting event for them. They feel like they are a major league baseball player,” Tammy said.

Though money will be received through registration fees, the Champions are seeking volunteers for the season as well as the golf outing. Along with volunteering, you can help out by donating anything from a gift card or gift basket for the Chinese auction or food for the outing. There is also an option to sponsor one hole at the outing for $75.00, or you can simply donate any amount.
Prizes given away include, but are not limited to, $25,000 for a hole-in-one, three $1,000 hole in one prizes, plus various other prizes to be determined.

Food will be provided both at the start and on the turn, and dinner will be served after the outing.
