More than a dozen Ford City homeowners and a handful of businesses will be affected by a month-long street project.
Borough Council Vice-President Tyson Klukan updated the timeline Monday night regarding the 6th Avenue Extension/Cypress Alley project.
“The paving project for 6th Avenue Extension and Cypress Alley will begin (tomorrow),” Klukan said. “They will begin with the 14th Street intersection along 6th Avenue.”
Klukan went further to say there will be a “few weeks” of excavation work before catch basins and a new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk are restored, inlets are removed and minor cleanup is performed along the hillside.
“Then, they will begin paving at the beginning of August. This will be an approximately-30 to 45 day construction period, pending weather,” Klukan said.
More than a half-dozen bids for the road paving, which is to be from 17th Street to the 14th Street intersection and Cypress Alley between 16th Street and 14th Street, were opened by Gibson-Thomas engineers during the third week of May before being awarded to K. Dolan Corporation, of Blairsville. K.Dolan is to complete the work for a little more than $150,000.
Ford City Borough received a $15,000 grant in County liquid fuels funds from the Armstrong County commissioners in May to go toward the project.
At the time, Ford City Borough Council President Carol Fenyes was grateful for the funding and thought of it as a “vote of confidence” from the commissioners.
Peoples Natural Gas also presented the borough with more-than $28,600 in funding.
As part of Peoples Natural Gas’ Long Term Infrastructure Improvement Program, the company replaced 1,000 linear feet of vintage bare-steel pipe along the roadway with new plastic pipe, and provided new customer service lines to impacted customers.
Klukan, who in May did not rule out additional paving projects, asked residents to use caution through the affected area.
