BENNETT: Memorial Day Weekend 2016

As we remember those who have gone before us on this Memorial Day weekend, let us remember what we must undertake so that those, who have died, will not have died in vain.

Now let’s set the record straight! There is no argument over the choice between peace and war. But, there is only one guaranteed way you can have peace and you can have it in the next second. All that is needed for immediate peace is to surrender.

But every lesson in history tells us that a greater risk lies in accommodation. This is the security that our well-intentioned liberal friends refuse to face. Their policy of accommodation is appeasement and it gives no choice between peace and war, but only the choice of war or surrender.

If we continue in appeasement - if we continue to back down - we will eventually have to face the final demand, “the ultimatum”, and what then?

When Nikita Khrushchev told his people he already knew the answer - that our retreat was the result of the pressure of the Cold War - he knew our surrender would be voluntary because of our weaknesses - spiritually, morally, and economically.

He believed this because he heard voices saying the slogan “better Red than dead”, or as one
commentator puts it: “ I’d rather live on my knees than die on my feet”.

And therein lies the road to war, because those voices do not speak for the rest of us.

If nothing is worth dying for, then when did this concept begin? Just as in the face of our enemy: Should Moses have told the Israelites to stay in Egypt? Should Jesus have refused the cross? Should the soldiers at Concord have refused to fire the shot heard around the world? Should those who have sacrificed and are remembered here this day be forgotten? For they did not die in vain.

Where, then, is the road to peace? There is a simple answer after all. You and I must have the courage to tell our enemy that there is a price we will pay to sustain our future, and a point at which they must not cross. You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.

We will preserve for our children this society - the last great place on earth - or we will sentence them to a thousand years of darkness.

So on this Memorial Day weekend, let us renew our pledge to this country. Let us renew our course of action. Let us make America great again!
