Herb and Bake Sale Benefits Scholarship Fund

by Jonathan Weaver

A neighborhood herb and bake sale tomorrow will help an Armstrong County student study in college this Fall.

The Armstrong County Herb and Garden Group’s annual sale Saturday will help the group fund their annual $250 scholarship to graduating seniors.

Seniors who applied by April 30 had to desire a degree in agriculture, environmental, food service, biology, or medicine

A sale has occurred for more than a dozen years, with West Shamokin High School seniors being awarded funding the past three years.

About 25 applications have been received each year.

During the upcoming May meeting, members will narrow down those applicants to a handful and then vote by numbers, meaning students are not identified by name during the final voting.

The scholarship winner is also invited to the Herb and Garden Group’s June social/meeting with their parent or guardians. The group meets the second Wednesday of every month at St. John’s Lutheran Church (on 4th Avenue) in Ford City.

The sale will be held from 9AM-1PM Saturday at the Ford City Public Library. More than 40 different kinds of herbs are to be available.

Proceeds from a garden-themed basket raffle will also go toward the scholarship fund.
