Armstrong County Tourist Bureau officials will be celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week at various places this week.

At the April 21 Armstrong County Commissioners public meeting, officials adopted a Proclamation proclaiming May as ‘Backyard Tourism Month’ in Armstrong County and recognizing May 1-7, 2016 as National Travel and Tourism Week.

In 2013, Travel and tourism accounted for $39.2 billion in Pennsylvania and $91.4 million in Armstrong County. The total economic impact of travel and tourism for the county resulted in $38.7 million in labor income, generated $7.7 million in State and local taxes, and $7.2 million in federal taxes.

In a proclamation read by County Commissioner Jason Renshaw, it pointed out that county, local and state tourism helps boost the local economy. He urged local residents to contact Director Kevin Andrews to find out local tourism opportunities to make plans this Summer.

In order to celebrate the impact tourism has on Armstrong County, the Armstrong County Tourist Bureau will be traveling around the county the entire business week - today setting up an information booth at Jerich Insurance Agency in Leechburg.

From 10AM-3PM through Friday, officials will also celebrate in Dayton, Elderton and Ford City before returning to the Market Street headquarters.

Andrews clarified that the travel will be held in place of the annual tourism open house in Kittanning.

A Kick-off to Tourism event is also planned in conjunction with the Punxsutawney Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana County Tourist Bureau for 10AM-4PM Saturday, May 7th at Silver Canoe Campground (located on the upper end of the Keystone Lake).
