Town and County Transit (TACT) is hosting two open houses today in downtown Kittanning to receive input from Armstrong County residents who use public transportation. Anyone who uses the public transportation system and wants to communicate their experience is welcome to attend. The earlier meeting is from 11AM until 1PM at the Armstrong County Health Center, and the later meeting is 4 until 6 PM at the transit terminal across from the Post Office.

“They’re pretty centrally located in downtown Kittanning and easy for people to get to. They’re both on our fixed route line so people are able to ride our fixed route bus to that,” says TACT General Manager Patti Lynn Baker. “So we’re hoping that people will be able to come out and look at the development plan so far. There’s still time to make comments on that before our consultants finalize the Transit Development plan.”

The Transit Vision and Master Development Plan is designed to overview the TACT’s existing services and make future plans for new services.

This is not the first set of open houses that the TACT has held. Along with the input from the last meetings, they collected 168 shared ride surveys and 86 fixed route surveys, according to Operations Manager Gerry Miller.

“We were pleased with the first open house that we had but we would like more input,” says Baker. “We’d like people’s opinions and things that they like, things that they’d like to see different, if they have any ideas of what might make the transportation better in Armstrong County. We’re always looking for ways to improve and how we can make things better and meet the transportation needs of the residents of Armstrong County. That’s what we’re here for.”

Currently, the TACT offers extensive transportation assistance to Armstrong County. When asked about the existing services offered, Baker responded: “The fixed route buses primarily provide transportation around Kittanning, Ford City, the mall, hospital, West Kittanning, Applewold, Manor, Manorville, and East Franklin Township, those types of areas. Just the very center part of Armstrong County. Shared ride encompasses all of Armstrong County. If you’re a resident of Armstrong County you can get a shared ride or reserve a shared ride trip anywhere in the county. We do offer certain trips from Armstrong County to Butler County, the Medical Corridor in Butler County, and Allegheny County as well as just over the line in Westmoreland County. So we go a lot of different places.”

If you are an Armstrong County resident who is interested in the future of the TACT, you are encouraged to join the meeting and express your thoughts at either of today’s locations.

Perhaps a refresher course on courtesy and traffic rules is in order for their drivers. Turn right on red means come to a complete STOP then turn with caution.
