Divine Redeemer faculty and students watched on in astonishment as the entire third grade class got to throw pies at Principal Nicalena Carlesi last Friday afternoon. “I’ve never had that feeling before,” said Carlesi. “It is scary. That first little girl must play softball. If she doesn’t then she should.”
The event was a reward for the third grade who had recently donated the most money during a contest. “Every year we do this during Lent as part of our service project,” said fourth grade teacher Bobbi Jo Furlong. ”It starts on Ash Wednesday and goes until the day before Easter vacation. We do it every year, and every year we try to do something different. Mrs. Carlesi volunteered to be pied this year as part of the reward.”
The Divine Redeemer School has been raising money in recent years in order to donate to a good cause. “Throughout the year we have dress down days, penny wars, and different activities to raise money because cancer has hit our building pretty hard,” said Furlong. ”We’ve had teachers diagnosed, friends, family, and parents. So, every year we raise between $2,500 and $3,000 through little school activities.
This particular contest was a donation contest between the school’s seven grades, K-6. It was able raise $282.50. “We had collection jars in the classrooms, and every Friday the students got updates,” said Furlong. ”It was just to see who could collect the most money. We had everything from pennies to $20 bills. We do it every year during Lent just as a way of reminding us that during Lent you should give to help others. All of our money goes to the American Cancer Society.
