The West Shamokin Wolves boys and girls basketball teams picked up wins on Friday night on day two of their Christmas tournament. The West Shamokin boys started the day for Wolves fans defeating Clarion Limestone 55-50 right before the girls River Hawks and Wolves championship match-up.
In the first match-up between the Armstrong and West Shamokin girls it was the River Hawks who walked away with a 27-26 victory at Armstrong’s Tip-Off Tournament.
A lot of time has passed since the first mach-up and West Shamokin Head Coach Frank Nagy knew that both teams were improved since their first game.
“Both teams are much improved (since the first match-up) and we know that we have improved, but you can see the same thing with Armstrong, that they have improved. We knew it was going to be a hard fought game, a close game and we were able to put it together and win,” Nagy said.
West Shamokin finished the game 6-7 from three and 10-10 from the free throw line, including Wolves junior guard Olivia Fusaro who finished 5-5 from three and 6-6 from the line to go along with her game high 25 points.
Armstrong Head Coach Kirk Lorigan said after the game that the three point shooting of the Wolves was one big factor in the River Hawks loss.
“We didn’t defend at all. They shot 86% from three and that’s a credit to them, because they can shoot the basketball, but we knew coming in they could shoot the basketball and we didn’t defend the perimeter,” Lorigan said.
Kenzie Lasher lead the team with 17 points for the River Hawks.
The Armstrong girls will be at home on Tuesday against Hampton while the West Shamokin girls and boys will travel to Deer Lakes on Wednesday.
