The West Shamokin varsity girls basketball team has been on a roll since their one and only loss to the River Hawks at Armstrong’s Tip-Off Tournament. Since then they have strung together three straight wins including their first two Heritage Conference victories at Blairsville and most recently at home Tuesday against Penns Manor (3-2) as they beat the Comets 53-30.

Heading into this season West Shamokin was picked to finish fourth in the Heritage Conference behind number one ranked Blairsville and Penns Manor (ranked third). Now as the season rolls along the Wolves are making many reconsider their rankings after defeating two of the top three teams in their conference to start the season.

In their latest win, 53-30 over Penns Manor, the Wolves opened the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back. Defensively in the first half the Wolves were very impressive as they allowed only 13 points.

After the game West Shamokin Head Coach Frank Nagy praised his bigs.

“That’s important (taking a 12-2 first quarter lead). We knew we had an advantage over them on the inside and Katie (Glover) and Jasah (Huth) did a nice job. We didn’t always finish as well as I would hope, but we knew that was an advantage so we kept pounding the boards and get after it,” Nagy said.

Pounding the boards may be an understatement for Glover as she posted 17 rebounds and had 17 points to go along with her boards. Also leading the way for the Wolves in the scoring and rebounding department was Andrea Orlosky who finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

West Shamokin will travel to Purchase Line on Thursday before having a week off leading up to their own tournament on December 28 and 29.
