A holiday tradition in Apollo Borough might be occurring for the last time this weekend.
Saturday will be the last Christmas Lane at Owens Grove after Apollo Area Events Committee members decided earlier this year to disburse.
But, Volunteer Brandy Martin reiterated that it will still be the biggest event yet – ending its run with a carnival theme.
“We’re going to have games and prizes, cotton candy, hot dogs, nachos and cheese, hot cocoa, cookies – and all of its totally free,” Martin said.
“For the first time, we’re giving away five adult baskets. You don’t have to purchase anything to get into the basket raffle, but this year we’re giving away five adult baskets as well as the big toy basket we always give away to one child.”
Martin, of Blairsville, said she isn’t sure if the eight volunteers realize the days are ticking away.
“I don’t think it has hit us all yet – I think it hit (Events Committee founder Debbie Schrecengost) after the (Moonlanding Parade) because she did get teary-eyed,” Martin said.
The committee’s mascot, Quack A. Pollo – played by local resident Chris Stewart -, will also be making what could be his final appearance alongside Santa Claus.
“I’m not sure if we’ll be retiring Quack A. Pollo or not,” Martin said.
Rumor has it that the Apollo Lions Club has considered taking over some of the Event Committee’s events – should more volunteers join the organization
According to the Lions website, the group meets the second and fourth Monday at 6PM at #3 firehall near Owens Grove.
Events Committee volunteers are prepared for about 150 children to attend Saturday, but Martin anticipates this year’s event to attract more children and families.
Along with usual fire truck rides from Apollo Hose Company #3, Martin said the event will also feature the Apollo-Ridge High School Band will also perform Christmas music and high school athletes will pass out candy.
Saturday’s festivities begin at 4:30PM.
