Credit Card Info Stolen From Local Restaurant

Customer credit card information has been compromised during the past six months at Wendys(R) in the Hilltop Plaza in East Franklin Township.

A national restaurant chain said credit card information used in purchases by their customers has been stolen over the past six months in cyber attacks.

The Wendys® restaurant in the Hilltop Plaza is one of the restaurants where malware was discovered in the computer point-of-sale system that enabled hackers to retrieve credit card information.

In a statement made by Wendys® President and CEO Todd Penegor, he said the cyber attacks began as early as January 2016 and continued through June. He called the situation a “highly sophisticated, criminal cyberattacks.”

WTAE’s website reported that some cards belonging to customers were used to make fraudulent purchases at other stores.

In addition to Kittanning, other stores in our area included Lower Burrell, Natrona Heights, New Kensington, and West Leechburg.

Penegor warned customers to review their credit card statements for incidents of fraud and identity theft.

Wendys® corporate office has also arranged to offer one year of complimentary fraud consultation and identity restoration services to all customers who used a payment card at their restaurants during the time the restaurant may have been affected.

“In a world where malicious cyberattacks have unfortunately become all too common for merchants, we are committed to doing what is necessary to protect our customers,” Penegor stated. “We will continue to work diligently with our investigative team to apply what we have learned from these incidents and further strengthen our data security measures.”

In addition to their website, customers may call with questions to (866) 779-0485 between 9AM to 6:30 PM Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).
