Local Financial Officer Accused of Theft

A large sum of money was allegedly stolen from three businesses in Kittanning - including the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County - by its financial officer during the course of the past few years, police say.
A Kittanning woman is accused of stealing funds from three local businesses during the course of several years.
Beverly Steffey, 62, is charged by Pennsylvania State Police in Kittanning and Kittanning Borough Police with three felony crimes.
According to State Police, Steffey was the financial officer/accountant for several years at the Progressive Workshop, Allegheny Valley Land Trust and the Armstrong County Conservancy Charitable Trust - all based in Kittanning - and business leaders noticed money was missing.
After a year-long investigation and with the assistance of a forensic accountant, police determined Steffey has been forging checks and stealing from the three businesses as she was paying bills.
A representative from the Land Trust did not return requests for comment.
