The Armstrong 13/14 year old baseball team faced off against Freeport at Worthington in their last game of the season.
Freeport started off the game exactly how a team would want to on the road, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Armstrong was able to answer in the second inning, where Seth Wienskovich showed good plate discipline getting on base via a walk. Once on base Wienskovich stole a base and earned a run, making the game 4-1 in favor of Freeport.
The next few innings were all Freeport, putting together six more runs over the next four innings to make the game 10-2 heading into the top of the seventh.
The seventh inning was Armstrong’s last chance to tie the game and possibly send it into extra innings, and for a while it looked like they had a chance.
After the first two batters grounded out and struck out, the pressure was on for Armstrong. Caleb Cujas was up to bat with a tall task. With two outs and an eight point deficit, Cujas was able to get on base with a single. That was enough to spark something in the offense as the next batter, Oden Cousins hit a single followed by a two RBI double from Ryan Cujas to make the score 10-4 Freeport. The biggest hit of the game was up next as Brady Wolfe hit an inside the park home run to score Cujas and make the score 10-6.
Unfortunately this is where Armstrong’s rally ended as the next batter up struck out. For some of these players this is the end of their season, but for others they have the All-Star game to look forward to.
The Armstrong players chosen to the All-Star team include: Oden Cousins, Seth Weinskovich, Ryan Cujas, Gavin Szyminski, and Brady Wolfe.
