On Friday, June 10th the Kittanning Kiowa 11/12 year old baseball team traveled to Rural Valley to take on the West Shamokin Wolverines at Ding-A-Ling field.

It hasn’t been an easy season for the Kiowa; after falling to West Shamokin by ten runs on Friday, their record is now 4-10.

“It’s very difficult, because we have a couple kids on our team that don’t look like they’ve ever played baseball before. Getting them motivated is easy to do, but when they don’t make plays and get down on themselves, it’s extremely difficult. I have other coaches that back me up to help them get motivated, but sometimes it’s still extremely difficult. It’s a constant battle, we don’t really have a player who is a leader. That hurts as well, because when the one kid is down, that leader should bring them up and we don’t have that.” Said Kiowa manager, Jon Adams.

The Kiowa have had to deal with a lot of complications this season, and Adams thinks that attributes to his teams struggle.

“Another thing that’s hurting us is that it’s that time of the year, and a lot of kids are going on vacation. We have a couple key kids, one of my draft picks broke his elbow, so he’s out for the year. Another one of my higher draft picks is on vacation. We just can’t catch a break, but you gotta keep trying.”

Although the Kiowa haven’t had the best season, there are still positives, like first year player Cam Kuntz.

“(Kuntz) played fall ball with us and this is his first year playing. He’s a big kid, most of his stuff is all in his stride and he’s so intimidating because of that. He throws pretty hard and he’s accurate, too .He’s definitely our ace,” Adams said.

The Kiowa will have another chance to earn a win on Monday, June 13th at Montebell Field in Kittanning. More information on the Kittanning Little League can be found at www.kllb.org.
