The third-annual Women Build is underway in Kittanning, having gotten off to a great start Saturday thanks to the support of Lowe’s, McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts and the participation of dozens of volunteers.
The two-day event at 306 Smith St. will continue on Saturday, May 7.
The Smith Street house project is part of the Wick City Revitalization program.
Four representatives from the Lowe’s store in Indiana were on hand during the first day to instruct close to 30 volunteers on the installation of insulation and drywall in the upper level of the Smith Street house.
Volunteers also painted the basement walls, sanded and painted doors, and studded walls on the first floor.
“It was a very successful day,” said Michael McElhaney, executive director of Armstrong Habitat for Humanity. “A lot of work was accomplished, thanks to Lowe’s, McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, new and returning volunteers and Habitat leaders Dominic Galassi, Pastor Carl Johnson and Corky Moore.”
McElhaney said he received a lot of positive feedback from the volunteers about their experience participating in the Women Build project. Many were happy to learn that they could help according to their unique set of abilities. A Smith Street neighbor, who relies on a wheelchair for mobility, helped by registering volunteers for the project, McElhaney said.
He noted that there is still a need for volunteer participation for this upcoming Saturday. Those interested in helping are invited to sign up for the 9AM-1PM time slot or for the afternoon shift (from 1-4PM) via ava.volunteerhub.org (and clicking on Armstrong and the calendar date) or by calling McElhaney at 724-467-2771.
Lowe’s is donating $5,000 in materials for the entire event and will continue to have technicians on hand to teach volunteers how to use tools and install drywall.
Lunch will be provided by McDonald’s of West Kittanning.
Dunkin Donuts will provide donuts to the morning crews.
