A fraternal organization yesterday donated money toward an upcoming safety event in Kittanning.

WoodmenLife Chapter 687 Board Secretary Ruth Ann Wineberg said organization fraternal members (officially part of Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society) agreed to donate $500 at their April dinner meeting. The over-1,500 members part of the local chapter pay a dollar in dues per month.

“It serves hundreds at the YMCA, so we thought that was something we wanted to be a part of,” Wineberg said.

Borough Police Chief Bruce Mathews said the donation will go toward the bicycle rodeo at the Community Safety event held at the Richard G. Snyder YMCA on North Water Street Sunday, June 5

Kittanning Elks Lodge #203 Secretary Laurie Johns said more than 20 bicycles to children aged 2-18 will be given away that Sunday.

A grant was received for 75 bicycle helmets, allowing Kittanning Elks officials to purchase more bicycles.

The bicycle rodeo begins at 2:30PM Sunday, but children will have to be pre-registered through the YMCA and participate in all three safety stations, including swim safety at the YMCA pool and fire safety at the mobile safety firehouse, to be eligible for the bicycle drawing.

Local schools will receive information about registration, but pre-registration should also be available that day.

Approximately 200 youth participated in last year’s safety event – with 64 participating in the bicycle ride and Chief Mathews serving as the safety instructor.

WoodmenLife members will vote later this year on other community donations.
