The countdown to Christmas starts this weekend. ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ will especially be noted in Ford City.
It may not be seasonably-cold weather, but Ford Memorial United Methodist Church Parishioners Janice and Tom Bernot are preparing the church as if it was Christmas Eve.
“Ford Memorial is trying something new for Christmas this year – we are having a live nativity,” Bernot said. “We built a stable and it will have live characters portraying the nativity scene, with live animals.
“It’s something I’ve had in the back of my mind for a long time.”
Bernot recalled First Baptist Church in Kittanning having a live nativity before, and a nativity parade in Ohio, but said this should be a unique event locally this year.
“People can either drive by to stop and look or they’re welcome to get out of their cars and talk to the characters,” Bernot said.
Although there will be shepherds, wisemen and angels, Bernot said there will not be a baby in the manger. Actors dressed in full costume come from all Allegheny River Charge churches, including Manorville and Union Avenue United Methodist.
Along with sheep and a pony, narrators will also read in the background. Borough officials approved of the animals.
“We have it set up for two one-hour shifts, but I truly believe that a lot of people who will show up for the 6PM hour are going to stay,” Bernot said. “There’s a lot of excitement around doing this.”
Refreshments will be available in the church basement all three evenings. Rev. Alison Berkey will greet people stopping in for cookies or drinks.
The live nativity will be featured in front of the Fourth Avenue church from 6-8PM tonight, tomorrow and Sunday.
All Allegheny River Charge parishioners will have their annual Christmas Eve Service at the Union Avenue Church in Kittanning.
