Another Kittanning athlete has committed to compete at the collegiate level.
Senior Wrestler Jacob Robb, last seasons, PIAA runner-up, committed to Mercyhurst University in Erie after a scholarship offer.
Last year’s WPIAL champion and 2014’s runner-up, Robb said he was excited to make the announcement.
Robb, who last visited Mercyhurst during the past few months, said he chose Mercyhurst over Pitt and Air Force – two schools that did not offer him scholarships - Saturday.
Robb said the scholarship chance wasn’t the deciding factor, though.
“I knew a lot of the kids at Mercyhurst,” Robb said.
Armstrong Coach Brandon Newill congratulated his senior star.
“We’re really excited for Jacob – there aren’t a lot of kids that are offered (full scholarships), and for him to have that opportunity to wrestle in college is something that I’m proud of as a coach,” Coach Newill said. “I’m really happy for him because he’s a really, really hardworking kid – it’s like a reward for him.”
Despite the announcement, Coach Newill still has high hopes for Robb’s senior season.
“We think Jacob is definitely in the top-3 in the state in his weight class,” Coach Newill said. “He’s poised, I believe, to win a state championship.”
The first official practice of the River Hawks team is Monday, with the first scrimmage November 28 at Fox Chapel.
Eight seniors – including fellow River Hawk football player Nick Croyle -will make up part of this year’s wrestling team.
Last year, state champion wrestler Jason Nolf, of Yatesboro, committed to Penn State University after an illustrious Wildcats career.
Robb also played defensive end on the combined Armstrong River Hawks varsity football team this past season before the team lost in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs last week.
His play earned him All-Conference honors for two consecutive years while on the Kittanning Wildcats football team.
Yesterday’s commitment came on the first signing date available.
