A former local police officer’s resignation from Ford City Borough Council became official last night.

Joshua Abernathy – who originally discussed his pending resignation during the summer - wrote his letter of resignation in an email sent September 27.

“It has been a pleasure and a great challenge working to make Ford City a financially-responsible borough and a place where business wants to be,” Abernathy wrote in documents obtained by the Kittanning Paper.

Council Vice-President Jerry Miklos, who said he knew Abernathy as a part-time police officer, motioned to accept Abernathy’s resignation.

“We are truly going to miss Councilman Abernathy. He brought a wealth of knowledge and understanding on many different issues – police, roads, construction,” Miklos said. “He helped us out immensely in several different instances.”

Councilman Gene Banks asked that Abernathy reimburse the borough $375 for the code official training he received earlier this year.

Abernathy, along with Borough Manager Eden Ratliff, attended Pennsylvania’s Construction Codes Academy in Harrisburg earlier this year to be certified to conduct building inspections.

Ratliff thanked Abernathy and the other sitting members of Borough Council for helping him excel in his current position and said new procedures from that training have been implemented

Council members will advertise to fill Abernathy’s spot. Abernathy would have been a councilman officially until January 2018, so his replacement will serve on Borough Council for the next two years.

Borough Council filled the unexpired term of another 2nd Ward council representative earlier this year.

After Scott Gaiser resigned in the summer, council members –including Abernathy - appointed Beth Bowser.

Abernathy resigns and they are advertising for a chief. Something smells a little fishy. Stay tuned!
