Before budget meetings begin to discuss 2016, a new Ford City Police Department might already be put in place.

Police Committee Chair Vicki Schaub confirmed advertisements are pending for both online and in print publication for a full-time police chief and part-time officers.

“Until we have the numbers, I think the Police Committee pretty-much agrees that we need a chief – which the ads are in for,” Schaub said. “We need to get the chief as soon as possible so we can get that person involved with part-time procedures.”

The fact that advertisements have been scheduled means that Borough Mayor Marc Mantini has signed final approval on a revised police pension ordinance that would allow full-time Officer-in-Charge Sgt. John Atherton to retire. Sgt. Mark Brice is also expected to resign his post.

Schaub said she will have a recommendation –potentially to start at120 hours of police protection - available at Monday’s Borough Council regular meeting after consultation with Police Committee Members Jerry Miklos and Beth Bowser.

“I know we need to move fast – that was mentioned several times that we were at the 11th hour. We’re well aware of that,” Schaub said. “The negotiation process took a lot more months than we anticipated. We thought this might have been done a couple town hall meetings ago.”

Schaub said the new police chief does not necessarily have to be from the local area.

“To me, it’s (based on) who is the best qualified – and I don’t even know if I feel that they have to live in the Borough,” Schaub said.
