Further Testing Needed to Determine Students’ Cause of Death
The death of a West Shamokin High School 10th grader is under investigation.
According to Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers, Damian Campbell, 15 of Yatesboro, fell during gym class Monday at the school in Rural Valley, but no injuries were found and he was sent back to class by the school nurse.
However, Campbell later collapsed at home, was flown to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township by medical helicopter and then pronounced dead after cardiac arrest.

A West Shamokin High School sophomore died Monday evening just hours after reportedly falling at the Rural Valley school during gym class and injuring his chest, but that did not factor into his death according to Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers.
“An autopsy was performed and there are no signs of injury, struggle or trauma,” Myers said. “The cause and manner of death is pending microscopic tissue and toxicology exams.”
Campbell was a local sports fan that was said to be very active in school activities.
Armstrong School District officials extended their condolences and prayers to the Campbell Family, and said grief counselors will be available to students and teachers
