Township Officials Attend County-Wide Meeting

Senator Don White was one of several speakers at the Armstrong County Association of Township Officers meeting yesterday.

Township officials from all over Armstrong County converged at the Kittanning Township Fire Hall for the 103rd annual meeting of the Armstrong County Association of Township Officers.

The organization is a part of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) based in Enola, PA.

Senator Don White spoke during the morning session, explaining proposed changes in the governor’s new plan.

Several commissioner candidates addressed the crowd, including Patty Kirkpatrick, Jason Renshaw, David Croyle, and Pat Fabian. Candidate Calvin Creighton also spoke on his desire to win the seat for County Controller.

James Wheeler, Director of Environmental Affairs for PSATS, reviewed programs and services to strengthen townships. He stated that 48% of Pennsylvania’s residents live in townships.

Armstrong County 911 Coordinator Ron Baustert reminded township officials that all communications by their workers on the new radio network can be heard not only by other municipalities, but also over the Internet. He stated that there have been problems with some municipal workers using inappropriate language and discussions across the network.

Other speakers included Greg Smith of the Conservation District, who is a dirt and gravel road specialist. Mike Foreman from the Department of Community and Economic Development addressed Township auditors specifically in a special workshop. Planning and Development Planning Coordinator Tom Swisher and Erin Kepple with the Southwest Planning Commission discussed County Aid applications and winter maintenance projects.

The number of participants attending the meeting was down from previous years, according to several unidentified attendees.
