OBIT: John R. “Jack” Shiring (Kittanning)
John R. “Jack” Shiring, 91, of Kittanning, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Kittanning Care Center.
He was born on February 16, 1924 in Kittanning, the son of Boyd and Johanna (Cross) Shiring. He was a lifelong resident of the community.
He was a WWII veteran, in the Army Air Corp. with 334th Signal Co. Wing 9th A.F., serving in Rhineland, Ardennas, and Central Europe, receiving three Battle Stars. He was a retired maintenance worker at ACMH Hospital from 1961 to 1986,
He was a member of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadaloupe Roman Catholic Church in Kittanning.
He was an avid outdorrsman, who loved to hunt and fish. He took great pride in teaching his nephews and nieves how to safely do the same.
He was married to his wife for 63 years, Elaine (Pozzuto) Shiring, who died in October 2011.
He is survived by his brothers: Joseph Shiring, and James and Laura Shiring - both of Ford City; sisters: Evelyn Edwards of Ford City, and Mary Shaner of Leechburg; sisters-in-law: Rita Shiring of Templeton, Evelyn Shiring of Ford City, and Betty Pozzuto of Kittanning; brother-in-law: Angelo Pozzuto of Kittanning; numerous nieces, nephews and their families; and special family friend: Suzanne.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Edwin and Vincent Shiring; sister: Kathryn Shiring.
Although Jack and Elaine had no children, their nieces and nephews were like their own. They opened their home to everyone, and he always told them: “If you go home hungry, it’s your own fault!”
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home in Kittanning. Parting prayers will be held at 8:30 AM on Saturday, March 28, 2015, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9AM at St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadaloupe Roman Catholic Church in Kittanning with the Reverend Douglas E. Dorula as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
