“Hard to Recycle” Days Cut Back
Half as many “Hard to Recycle” Days will be held this year in Armstrong County.
Fees are minimizing the bi-annual events from every April and October to only April this year - Saturday April 25 to be exact.
The Spring “Hard to Recycle” Day will be held from 8AM to Noon at the Armsdale Complex located on State Route 85, Planning Division Director Sally Conklin announced yesterday.
“Normally, the Fall is a lot slower than the Spring, and we have to pay the tire contractor so much just to show up and then so much per ton,” Conklin said. “It was getting hard to break-even, so we decided to just go with one this year and see how that goes.”
Also, officials are not taking recyclable electronics.
Conklin said the department couldn’t find a company to take the items without a fee.
Other items not collected include: burnt, soiled, oversized or rimmed tires, antifreeze, paint, thinner, flammables, and items from commercial businesses and dealers.
Items that will be collected include: clean car and truck tires with a $1.00 charge, white goods with a $10.00 fee for items containing Freon, scrap metal, used motor oil, lead acid batteries, office paper, newspapers, corrugated cardboard, bi-metal cans, aluminum cans, #1 & #2 plastic bottles & jugs and green, clear and brown glass bottles & jars.
