Ford City War Memorial Lit by Volunteer

American flags and the inscription on the World War II Memorial in Ford City Park can now be viewed after dark thanks to a new spotlight.

A Ford City native was recognized for lighting up the World War II memorial in Ford City Park before a holiday of remembrance.
Manor Township Resident Gen Ray added a spotlight to the memorial during the holiday season.
“There wasn’t a light on it – there was never a light on it – and I was after Council to put the light on it and on the John B. Ford statue. We’re working on (the statue light), but I just took it on my own to go down and put my own little spike in for (Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day December 7).”
Ray, originally of Ford City, also changed some of the flags
“My dad (Klement Klimaowicz) was in the war, and I just thought it was a shame that it wasn’t lit up or taken care of,” Ray added. “I try.”
Ray – who visited the USS Arizona and other tour highlights in Hawaii this past summer - said that other women have noticed and appreciated the memorial being lit after dark.
Council President Kathy Bartuccio appreciated Ray’s volunteerism throughout the year, and encouraged more local residents to give back in 2015.
“I think we all need to work together more. I think we can all just give a little more – volunteering, helping our neighbors – and we can get it done,” Bartuccio said.
With all that council members dealt with in 2014, Council Vice-President Jerry Miklos was optimistic.
