‘Hard to Recycle Day’ Opportunities Continue this Season

Once the cold temperatures leave Armstrong County, some residents will divert their attention to spring cleaning.

The first “Hard to Recycle” Day for disposing of paper, televisions and other electronics will be held from 8AM-Noon Saturday, May 17 outside the Armstrong Administration Complex located on State Route 85 in Rayburn Township.

In March, county commissioners approved a Waste Tire Collection Recycling contract to collect tires again this year.

During the May and September events last year, more than 1,800 tires were collected.

The agreement was approved with Mahantango Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool.

Armstrong County Department of Planning and Development Planning Division Director Sally Conklin said costs for the services will be met during the May 17 and September 13 “Hard to Recycle” events.

“We will get a grant from DEP that will reimburse 50 percent of the cost and the other 50 percent will be collected from user fees,” Conklin said.

Commissioners unanimously approved of the contract, with Commissioner Rich Fink also noting the high community turnout.

“In the past, we’ve had great participation,” Fink said.

Item totals collected in 2013 also include more than 19 tons of electronics – such as desktop and notebook personal computers and servers, printers and video game consoles - 15 tons of scrap metal and almost 270 gallons of used motor oil.

Items not collected include burnt, soiled, oversized or rimmed tires, antifreeze, and flammables.

Individual municipalities also plan garbage collection events. For example, Manor Township will hold their trash week May 5-10 at their municipal shed during various hours and Ford City Borough will offer a week of dumpster collection for each ward at the end of July/beginning of August.
