BENNETT: Don’t Let the Facts Get in the Way

by Jack Bennett

As the gun control debate rages on, it is becoming very clear that there is a large group of people who think the Second Amendment is about hunting. Friends, it has nothing to do with duck (or deer) hunting and everything to do with your right of self protection and as a last resort to government tyranny.

So why all the political focus on “assault weapons”? The obvious answer is because those firearms have been used in so many murders and crimes over the last 20 years, “right”?

Wrong. According to the FBI’s most recent Uniform Crime Report, a summary of all serious
crimes committed each year , in 1992 violent crime incidents were 752 per 100,000 and a murder rate of 9.3 per 100,000.

In 2011 the violent crime rate dropped to 386 and the murder rate to 4.7%. That’s nearly a 50% decline in each category. And what was going on in the gun world ? The number of firearms increased dramatically–including sales of more than six million “assault rifles”.

The 2011 FBI data shows 323 murders committed with rifles of any kind. However, guns
defined as “assault weapons” were used in less than 0.5 (½ %) of all murders with guns in 2011.

By comparison, 496 murders were committed with hammers and clubs, and 1,694 murders were
committed with knives.

Notably, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show that drunk drivers are responsible for nearly 10,000 deaths per year in the U. S. – far more than deaths involving guns of all kinds in 2011. (Should we have federal background checks every time someone orders a beer?)

Additionally, according to the demographic and geographic profile of most violent crimes,
perpetrators who murder with guns are associated with gangs and/or drug money.

While you are checking on all of the above, please take a look at the following:

1. Homeland Security has ordered 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammo. Since the army doesn’t use this type of ammunition, who is it to be used on?

2. Why has FEMA established over 800 concentration camps all over the US. For Whom ?

3. Why has FEMA ordered 140 million meals, blankets, and body bags ?

4. Why have we graduated over 300 youth from special training in Kentucky. What’s next ?

5. What is the FEMA - Red / Blue List Marked for Termination ?

There are but two possibilities for the wave of gun-restricting legislation being discussed: Legislators are either woefully misinformed, which is unforgivable, or they are using a terrible single event to justify their attempt to control the American people further–which is far worse.

    This column is pure delusional paranoia. And those are the facts.

    @ Bennett
    As usual, you didn’t check your figures!
    Gun related murders and drunk traffic fatalities are nearly equal.
    All gun related deaths were over 32,000 in 2011.
    Related traffic deaths since 1991 have DECREASED every year, (from over 15,000 in 1991 to over 10,000 in 2011)
    Gun related deaths have INCREASED every year in the same period, by about 10% total over the time period.
    So, what is your point? Give everyone a beer before they go hunting?
    I am amazed that you apparently went to great lengths to substantiate your numbers in favor of your position, yet didn’t include any accurate statistics as “….far more than deaths involving guns of all kinds in 2011″.
    Note: 2011 is the last full year statistics are available.

    A typical Bennett column.r
    Just for fun—-where are these 800 concentration camps? O and your source for this information is what?
    And 1.2 billion hollow point bullets? Really? And the source for this information? Last year it was the SSA, and the year before it was some other government agency.
    And the 300 youth who graduated from a special training program. How sinister.
    So tell us Jack what is the FEMA red/blue list?
    Gun control is about keeping guns away from the unqualified—mentally ill, former felons, etc. not about taking away guns from the hunters and those who think they need a gun for self defense.
    But if facts are the issue, then give us verifiable facts, not ginned up paranoia.

    Throw a straight jacket on this guy! There’s a reason none of the other right wingers touched this one.

    There’s a certain point where one has to realize they’re beginning to embarrass themself.

    I intentionally sat this one out in anticipation of the left response - and they sure came out swinging. The KP has offered all five of you equal space in the paper for you to write ‘your stuff’. So, where is it? Nellie Bly wrote why she was voting for Obama. Remember? Come on, you five - write an entertaining left-based article!

    i THINK THAT jACK HAS FINALLY GONE “ROUND THE BEND”. TAKE HIS GUNS AWAY!

  • By scott_starr, January 22, 2013 @ 1:05 PM

    @Getsmart
    the column deals specifically with assault weapons, not all guns so the argument made stands.

    @Jackbennet
    please don’t follow in the footsteps and words of that idiot Alex Jones in terms of the concentration camps.

    the MRE’s ordered by FEMA make sense, distribute them in times of disaster. ( Katrina, the storm in NYC and Jersey).

    I have no idea what you mean about special training… what exactly is it?

    The FEMA red/blue list- I suggest you submit a FOIA request to determine what they come up with.

    Please don’t give the Lib’s more fodder for their illness.

    @Admin

    I know you cite freedom of the press and dissociation from opinion expressed by others, but this one is just an insult to intelligence. A simple google fact check, or just asking for verification of facts would give your paper more credibility. Really.

  • By GetSmart, January 22, 2013 @ 10:33 PM

    Sorry Scott-starr, but Jack specifically stated 10,000 was “far more than deaths for guns of all kinds in 2011.” So, no, his argument is incorrect on this point based on false facts. Total gun related deaths in 2011 were over 30,000.
    As his title states, “Don’t let the facts get in the way”!
