DEP Invites Schools, Students to Join Fight Against Litter
The Department of Environmental Protection and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invite all Pennsylvania schools and school districts to join the Pennsylvania Litter-Free School Zone Program.
“Learning during childhood how to keep schools and neighborhoods clean and litter-free is a lifelong skill and value,” DEP Secretary Mike Krancer said in a press release. “Participating schools provide an example everyone can follow in making Pennsylvania a more beautiful place to live, work, play and learn.”
The program encourages students to keep their campuses and neighborhoods free of litter while boosting public awareness by displaying a Litter-Free School Zone sign outside the school. Participating schools will be eligible for a random drawing for one of two $250 cash prizes from the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association.
The program aims to prevent littering by teaching children about environmental stewardship.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful encourages schools to register their litter pickup or cleanup events with the Great American Cleanup of PA, online at www.gacofpa.org. Participants in the Great American Cleanup of PA are eligible for free supplies, such as bags, gloves and vests. Participating schools are required to report their results to the Great American Cleanup of PA and the Litter-Free School Zone program.

Again, the parents should be teaching these kids not to litter. I`ve picked up a bunch for the church and Lions club. We never got any money. Why not take the kids out and make them pick up some trash. Then maybe they won`t litter. Oh, forgot. Parents won`t allow it. Hmmmm.

mark - You’re missing the point here - this is the age of entitlement - people are entitled to throw trash out of the window - there’s no consequences. Then, good samaritans come along and clean it up for the entitled. That’s how it works.

Folks - my comment above is humor. I agree with mark - I also go out and help pick up trash along roads. Some of the trash is not intentional - like non-tied-down loads and truck tire caps coming off and such, but a lot of it is avoidable with people having a sense of responsibilty for their trash - take it to a trash can.

Entitlements. There is a subject we could start a whole new column on. Maybe admin will have a story in the future that we can discuss this subject. WOW! I know I would get involved.
Getting back tho, threw a wrapper out the window coming home from the store. We flew up against the dash[before seat belt laws] and the car stopped. Dad said, “Go pick it up!”. Walked back seemed forever to retrieve it. Don`t even think I picked up what I threw but I returned with a piece of trash and we proceded home. When home, he gave me a paper grocery bag and sent me down the road from our house to “Fill it up”. Simple lesson learned from a good parent. I don`t need a $250 gift to not litter.

Jorn, your comment makes absolutely sense. You are basically saying that the only source of trash comes from people who throw it out of a window (car I am assuming) because they feel entitled to do it. If you are saying this is the only source of trash, then you are absolutely wrong. If you are saying children should not learn to be good stewards of the earth, then you are wrong again. If you are saying what you did because of your know-it-all right wing conservative attitude because you think you are right just because you believe you are, then you are wrong again. Your know-it-all attitude really gets annoying at times. Children should learn to take care of the environment and this is one way to learn how to do it.

….makes absolutely no sense…. Edit from the first sentence in the last post. Horn, do you find it necessary to throw your opinion in EVERY thread? Your overinflated sense of self-worth is very obvious.

Ahhh, lucky1 - I can sense your anger with your post and typos. Love to flush out those liberals. Read my post of 5:50AM, April 23, 2012 - that is, if I don’t anger you too much. You’ll note that I posted that one before either of yours. Then, in the future, just skip over my posts if you find discomfort with them.
But, it is nice to hear from you - you’ve been very quiet since the Bennett 1st amendment commentary.
