BUFFONE: A Glimmer of Hope for the Penguins

by John Buffone

Shining through the grey skies that symbolize the Pittsburgh Penguins first round series with the Philadelphia Flyers is a small glimmer of hope. During game four on Wednesday, the Penguins had an opportunity to pack it in. After all, they were down 3-0 in a series where they looked completely outmatched, three of their players were suspended and their goalie was showing more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. However, it looked like Pittsburgh finally had enough of the bullying and decided to beat down the Flyers on the scoreboard instead of in fisticuffs. During the game, the Penguins finally looked like the classier and more talented team, the Flyers’ goalies finally looked liked, well, themselves and Marc-Andre Fleury finally shed the cement skates that were weighing him down in the first three games. Though their 10-3 beat down only staved off elimination, there has to be a whole new mindset for both teams. The Penguins now know they do in fact have the ability to defeat Philadelphia and beat them handily if they keep their composure. The Flyers on the other hand, have lost that superiority feeling they were wearing on their sleeve and have finally seen their real vulnerabilities between the posts. While this series is still far from even, a win tonight from the Penguins at home will raise a few eyebrows. After all, a 3-2 series doesn’t seem so insurmountable, does it?
