A Kittanning woman escaped injury after the stove in her apartment caught fire yesterday.
Nicole Calbro, of 506 Hawthorne Ave. was in the basement at 5:45PM Wednesday when her gas stove started burning.
Kittanning Hose Company #4 2nd Assistant Chief Mike Swartz determined the smell.
“There was a pan of grease on the stove that had been left unattended. She was in the basement, came upstairs and could smell it and went over to the stove. When she took the lid off, it was hot enough that it erupted into fire,” Swartz said.
Only minor damage to the stove, ceiling and nearby articles were incurred, but Swartz said it could’ve been a larger fire had Calbro not dialed 9-1-1.
“Very, very minor damage - you’d never thought that with the amount of smoke that was in there,” Swartz said.
After the smoke was vented from the home, firefighters allowed Calbro to re-enter the apartment, owned by Bob Iseman of Ford City.
The structure is modeled for only one apartment.
A duplex on the other side of the street was also damaged by a fire nearly three years ago. That home - 509 and 511 Hawthorne Ave. - has since been condemned.
Kittanning Fire Marshal “Buzz” Kline arrived on-scene and classified the fire as ‘accidental.’
The roadway was blocked by the two fire engines during the investigation.
Hose Company #6 and Kittanning #6 Ambulance personnel also responded, but did not have to treat any residents.
Crews returned to their fire stations about 20 minutes later.
