BUFFONE: Steelers Throwbacks Need Thrown Back

by John Buffone

So…how many of you will be flooding NFL apparel shops for one of these bad boys? The Pittsburgh Steelers unveiled their 2012 throwbacks to commemorate their 80th season earlier this week and this is what they came up with. The Steelers are expected wear these jerseys for two home games in the upcoming season. The jerseys are much like the 1934 version worn by the Steelers when they were still known as the Pirates. The horizontal-striped black/yellow design is hard enough on the eyes but can you imagine what James Harrison and Casey Hampton will look like in these things? In fact, the entire Steelers defense
is going to like a mutated swarm of bumblebees trying to pollinate opposing
quarterbacks. Just in case you were wondering, the Steelers will wear their black
helmets with this jersey while the socks that go with this monstrosity are accordingly striped in black and yellow. While it’s sometimes fun to see teams wearing their old school threads like the San Diego Chargers’ baby blues or the Tampa Bay Bucs’ orange crème jerseys, some uniforms are meant to stay in the past and were discontinued for a reason. Although some die-hard Steelers fans may feel obligated to purchase one of these eyesores to either add to a collection of memorabilia or stupidly prove their fanhood, it’s safe to say that this is
throwback that needs thrown back.
