BUFFONE: Pirates Pitching Surprising Critics
by John Buffone
With all the excitement brewing over the Penguins playoff run, it’s easy to overlook the ever-struggling Pirates. During their most recent series with the Cincinnati Reds however, there are some stats that are jumping out of the books. During the series, both Charlie Morton and Kevin Correia pitched complete games. A stat once thought unattainable by the league’s projected worst rotation. Morton only allowed 1 earned run off of 5 hits on Friday only to see Correia go nine total innings on Monday where he only allowed 2 earned runs off of 4 hits. So far it looks like Morton and Correia are putting their forgettable 2010 seasons behind them with Morton having a 2-0 record while Correia is 3-1. The Pirates victory on Monday improved their road record to 7-3. Last season, it took until mid-June for the Buccos to win their seventh division road game. Looking at these impressive stats should not excite Pittsburgh fans to start ordering their playoffs tickets however. The Pirates are an abysmal 1-5 at home and still have 146 games to revert to the Pirates of old. Either way, at least baseball will still be relevant in May this year.
