GOP Takes Back Senate Seat in Pennsylvania

After a nail-biting wait last night, Pat Toomey emerged as the victor in Pennsylvania’s highly-contested Senate race over Joe Sestak.

The drama began to unfold nearly 19 months ago when incumbent Arlen Specter abandoned the Republican Party. Specter was defeated in the May primary by Sestak, a two-term Philadelphia-area congressman and former Navy vice admiral. Sestak was out in front most of the evening. Shortly before 11PM, Toomey’s numbers began to swell as the western portion of Pennsylvania was counted. The unofficial count led to a win for Toomey by the narrow margin of 51%.

“I want to congratulate Joe Sestak on a very spirited, and very tough, and very competitive campaign,” Toomey said during his acceptance speech last night. “He and his supporters really deserve to be commended for the vigorous effort that they put out. I also want to say how much I respect the service that Joe Sestak has given to this country. I respect both the 31 years that he spent in the United States Navy and the four years that he spent in the United States House of Representatives. He has served this country well, and he has done so honorably, and I wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.”
