Pennsylvania State Police investigated several accidents this past weekend in Armstrong County.

On Saturday, Freda Smith, 52, of Elderton was traveling eastbound shortly after midnight near Farster Road in Plumcreek Township. Smith failed to negotiate a left-hand curve with her 2003 Ford Taurus and exited the roadway into a soft shoulder, then re-entered the roadway. Her vehicle began sliding in a counter-clockwise direction, producing 56 feet of skid marks before exiting the roadway again and striking a guard rail with the front passenger side of her vehicle. After initial impact, the vehicle continued to spin and impacted the guard rail again with the rear passenger portion and coming to rest against the guard rail.

Smith was observed to display signs of intoxication and was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. She was subsequently placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. Charges are pending lab results.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Elderton Fire Department and Mohney’s Towing.

On Sunday morning around 9:30, State Police investigated a crash on Kerr Road in Kittanning Township. A 2000 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east towards Campbell Hollow Road and lost control while rounding a curve. It struck an embankment on the western side of the roadway and rolled onto its roof. The driver fled the scene and left the vehicle behind, partially on the roadway. An investigation is continuing into the incident.

On Sunday afternoon, police investigated another accident on the Pony Farm Road near the Sportsman Club in North Buffalo Township. H. Delbert Rinker, 86, failed to negotiate a left-hand curve with his 2001 Ford station wagon and struck an embankment, rolling the vehicle onto its driver side.

Also Sunday afternoon, a two-vehicle crash occurred on Route 268. A 2000 Ford Focus was traveling south on Route 268 approaching the intersection of Route 9103. A 2007 Chevrolet failed to stop for a posted stop sign and the intersection and struck the Ford vehicle, disabling it. There were no injuries and the Ford vehicle was towed from the scene. There was not accurate information obtained from the Pennsylvania State Police about the drivers at time of publication.

SUNDAY: Shortly after 12 noon, 86-year-old H. Delbert Rinker struck an embankment and rolled his 2001 Ford station wagon onto its driver side. Pennsylvania State Police did not report any injury in this accident.
