Sabers Shut-Out Vikings 40-0 Friday Night

by Henry Forringer

Ford City defeated its latest Allegheny Conference opponent Apollo Ridge
Friday night and secured the share of the conference title first since 2007.

The Sabers, rank No. 7 in Class AA and they defeated Apollo-Ridge, 40-0. They had their lowest team rushing output of the season, 132 yards, but managed 121 through the air. Their defense was suffocating, as it has been often this season: They shut out their second straight opponent and allowed just 74 yards. After their first drive yielded nothing, the Sabers marched down field for touchdowns on four consecutive possessions. Cody Gispanski ran for two scores; Kent Commodore and Mike Krochta each had one rushing touchdown.

The Sabers (8-0, 6-0) piled up 149 yards in the first half. Short fields limited
their opportunities to gain yardage ?€? Ford City’s average starting field position was the Apollo-Ridge 37-yard line ?€? as much as Apollo-Ridge’s effort to crowd the line of scrimmage with defenders.

Ford City’s defense held Apollo-Ridge (0-8, 0-6) to 1 yard and did not allow a first down through two quarters.

Gispanski found Commodore open over the middle for a 36-yard touchdown pass early in the third to put Ford City up, 33-0. The senior finished 7 of 13 for 121 yards. A 5-yard touchdown run by Dylan Piper-Stitt initiated the mercy rule.
